1816: New-York Spectator, (New York, NY) Saturday, April 20th, 1816. New London: On the 16th inst.
Elias Perkins, son of the Hon. Elias Perkins, aged 8 years. He was riding in the
street in a chaise with a servant, when the thrills of the carriage drew
from the tugs, and alarming the horses they went off full speed. The
stupid driver dropping the reins and jumped out, leaving the unfortunate
child to his fate. In turning the corner of State street, at the
Post-Office, the chaise overset and passed over the body of the child,
which it so dreadfully mangled that he died an hour after. He was a
remarkable fine, interesting boy. South Bridgewater: Ebenezer Perkins, 71
